My name is Abida, the owner of The Red Lychee blog. As you might expect from such a website, I really like food. I like to cook food, write about food, talk about food, and of course, most importantly, eat food. Growing up, I was very blessed to have a mother who was an incredible cook and always served the most flavourful of traditional Bangladeshi dishes. Sadly though I had nary a clue how to recreate any of those dishes myself.
Fast forward to my university years when I no longer had my mother to feed me her amazing food, I was faced with a little bit of a dilemma. In between the typical student meals eaten from the tin, I discovered that my cooking skills really needed some work! Some of my first attempts at cooking traditional Bengali recipes ended up in soggy rice and watery chicken curry. Not appetising at all. I endeavoured then to work on improving my skills in the kitchen so I would never have to suffer the plight of soggy rice ever again.
It took a lot of trial and error, but with each attempt I made small improvements, until it got to the stage where I was no longer worried of feeding my dishes to other people. In fact, with my newly found confidence, I welcomed people to try out my food! In between all of this, I left the comfort of the education sector and entered the ‘adult’ world with all its responsibilities and duties. Amidst all this mayhem and the 8-5 life of a teacher , I found cooking to be a relaxing respite, where I could get creative and let loose. Though my foray into cooking began with trying to replicate my mother’s traditional Bangladeshi recipes, I discovered that I also like to experiment with other international cuisines too. Occasionally, when I can muster the patience, I dabble in a little bit of baking.
I started this blog in December 2014 with the intention of documenting my frolics and misadventures in the kitchen. As time has gone on, my experience and confidence has increased and I have discovered a love for food that I enjoy sharing with others. As I often write on my posts, if I can do it, anyone can! I hope this website can provide help and reassurance for those who may not feel very confident in the kitchen and are looking to learn a few new recipes.
The inspiration behind the name of my blog comes from my Bangladeshi heritage, where the Lychee fruit grows in abundance. A lot of my traditional Sylheti and Bengali recipes here come from my mother. As they say, mum’s food is always best! Not only that, Bangladeshi home cooking is so flavourful and diverse, but rarely gets the attention it deserves, compared to its Indian or Pakistani counterparts. Though most Indian restaurants in the UK are actually run by Bangladeshis, the food they serve is nothing like authentic Bangladeshi home cooking. It’s flavour and variety on a whole new level, and I hope that this website can help to bring a little bit more attention to this fantastic cuisine.
